Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle School is a tough time for everyone. I try to remember that as I plan my lessons and interact with my students. My students at Buck Lodge are a diverse group, both culturally and academically.
As a Title I school with most students receiving free or reduced lunch, we are faced with a multitude of challenges in the classroom.
But what I appreciate about my students is that they don't often let these obstacles stand in their way. They are a resilient group full of creativity and a desire to make a difference in their community.
My Project
As a one-to-one iPad school, a class set of headphones would go a a LONG way. It would ensure that all of my students of varying reading levels are exposed to complex texts on a daily basis.
Students with learning disabilities and/or language barriers would especially benefit from these headphones.
It would allow these students to better access programs such as vocab.com and NewsELA with the goal of improving their literacy levels. It would help them with pronunciation and phonetics, spelling, and reading comprehension, which are all vital in a Social Studies classroom.
In addition, as all students learn differently, this would open up multiple ways to access content in a given lesson. For example, students will be able to watch videos independently at a station, record themselves for a project, and collaborate more effectively with their classmates. All of this without distracting others with noise from their iPads or Chromebooks! These would be great for differentiation and open up lots of opportunities for my students. And I KNOW they could use the a break from listening to me talk!
Lastly, this would be a huge boost for families who are unable to provide students with headphones. Our community has a large percentage of low-income households, so decent headphones are not exactly a priority for many. A class set of these headphones would certainly level the playing field and leave these students better prepared for high school and beyond.
