Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a very busy place, with students coming and going. Sometimes I have my whole class together while other times, students are in mainstream classrooms, at speech therapy, or with the audiologist. I hope that by 5th grade, they will be successfully mainstreamed for most of their day.
My students are 2nd through 5th graders with hearing loss.
Because it is a special day class, they are behind academically, but they are all starting to mainstream for part of their day. They are such sweet kids who are eager to do well. They all wear hearing aids or cochlear implants and are learning to listen and speak. Our school has such a loving, inclusive atmosphere, and I am so grateful that general education teachers and students accept those who have additional needs without thinking twice.
My Project
My students need headphones that will work with their hearing aids. My students will use these headphones during independent work time. We have 2 computers and several iPads in our room, but most of the apps need sound to work properly. While I am working with a group, students who are working independently will be able to use technology to listen to an audiobook, play an educational game, or practice a skill they have not yet mastered. Having headphones that work with their hearing technology will give them access to the iPads and computers in our room. These headphones not only fit over their aids and implants, but they are specifically made for people with hearing loss.
My students cannot use earbuds because they already have earmolds (part of the hearing aid) in their ears.
Having headphones made for them will allow me to work more closely with a group of students without having to manage the students in independent time. The noise-canceling technology and pure incentive of getting to use apps will help the students in the group working with me focus on their task while the independent group develops skills.
