Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, bright and energetic. They are middle schoolers just beginning to discover themselves, seeking out opportunity to explore new topics and quench their thirst for understanding the world around them. They dream of becoming doctors, lawyers and engineers, and to escape the poverty that surrounds them. My students understand that though their circumstances have created significant barriers to their achievement, they can and will overcome those barriers to reach their full potential.
My students take their learning seriously and are fully committed to their intellectual growth.
I have a system in my class that reinforces remediation, which is essential since many of my students begin the school year severely below grade level in their math abilities. They consistently seek out opportunities to work on mastery of skills and concepts on which they have yet to demonstrate proficiency. As the school year has progressed, many have grown a significant amount, which I attribute entirely to their resilience and determination to succeed.
My Project
My students use in-class Chromebooks for daily warm-ups, tutorial videos and math technology software to practice their skills and bring them up to grade-level. Being able to use these Chromebooks this year, has given our classroom a major advantage since we are able to access so many more resources.
However, the headphones we are using are very old and most have broken.
With some headphones just scraping by and others completely broken, using the Chromebooks for meaningful and engaging math activities has become a challenge since students can't hear the videos or click on the help button that guides them through practice in our math software.
Our class is seeking a new set of headphones and a case to keep them all safe. This will impact my students everyday and make their learning much more engaging, enjoyable and effective!
