Ms. Pearson from Las Vegas NV is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need personal headphones to maximize their learning experiences as they complete individual tasks that require the use of technology in our classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My 1st graders come from diverse backgrounds and their needs range from academic to social and behavioral. Despite the challenges of the crime ridden neighborhood, my students return to school every day. All of the students in our Title I School receive free breakfast and lunch. Some even leave with food bags for their families so they can maintain throughout the weekend. With the constant housing struggle for our families, many of my students return to their temporary homes (apartments and weekly suites) to little to no enrichment or reinforcement of learning taken place at school.
Despite any challenges my students may face once they leave, they return to school day after day eager to learn, explore, help others, and make smart choices.
Our school has a computer lab and my classroom has some electronic devices for student use. However, of the few headphones we have left, some only work in one ear and students constantly complain that the headphones are extremely uncomfortable and hurt their ears. This makes it difficult for them to focus, especially during computerized assessments.
Funding this project will allow my students to access interactive reading and math applications/websites without distracting others with sounds from the computer devices being used.
For my struggling readers, the headphones will be used as they follow along with online books and audio recordings. This allows them to work independently on increasing reading fluency without possibly feeling embarrassed by their book(s) should they be on a lower level than another student. In regards to math and phonics, students can use the headphones while playing educational games that promote fluency and phonemic awareness.
Providing each student with his/her own pair of headphones not only aids them in being successful as they complete tasks based on their personal ability level, it will also teach them to be responsible by taking care of their headphones for long term use.
