From the onset of my time here, I have always felt like this place is a bit of an anomaly. On my very first open house night, students I had never met walked straight up to me, introduced themselves, and shook my hand. I was beyond impressed and this impression hasn't wavered. The kindness and politeness of the students are exemplified throughout the year, from the respectful silence, a gym full of students ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade gives veterans at our annual Veteran's Day assembly to the outpouring of support from our community to help whenever help is needed.
I teach AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, PreAP English, English 3, 6-12 Alternative ELA Education, and I am privileged to teach some of the most amazing students in our state.
My students are hard-working and high achieving. Within the past 5 years, our school has had 5 Academic All-Staters and a National Merit Finalist. We challenge our students on a daily basis and they rise to the occasion, proving their successes inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
In addition to teaching during the normal school day, I also teach alternative education for 4 hours one night per week, along with 3 other teachers who do the same. The teacher's role is to be there for any assistance, guidance, and help, not only in academics, but also in students' lives. These students are in the program for various reasons, but they are all at-risk of not being successful in the regular school setting. Their curriculum is online and they are working on Chromebooks. Very few of them have headphones, but most of the lessons have videos that need to be viewed for them to be understood. Having 10 different lessons playing at the same time, even if set on low volume, can be very distracting. In addition, using the touch pad can also be hard for some of the activities and having a mouse would help greatly.
Providing our students each with a mouse and a set of headphones would greatly improve their learning environment and would aid in helping them be more successful in the program.
