My students are interested in learning about bears, butterflies, dolphins, tornadoes, apples, the sun, and many other thrilling science topics. Scholastic News brings real-life science topics into classrooms every week.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
said it best- "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education." I am a first grade teacher in a rural area in Idaho. My students' economic situations are just as varied as their family dynamics. We celebrate the diversity in our school and we love being known as the "Stars." Seventy percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Regardless of these factors, every one of my students has a great desire to create, learn, explore, play, and to think critically.
My Project
I have been using Scholastic News for many years. We will have a new administrator next year, and I just received word that the school will no longer be able to subscribe to this great magazine for my first graders. I want to be able to share high-quality nonfiction text with my students that grows in complexity throughout the year. The colorful photos and engaging topics get kids excited to read. The topics help us meet our Common Core and state standards. If we are not able to renew our subscription, I will really feel bad for the kids. They look forward to receiving their copy each week. We often follow up our discussions with a science experiment or an art project that goes along with the topic.
Scholastic News provides a rich cross-curriculum reading experience for the children where they can learn about American symbols, sports, community helpers, weather, the solar system, and animals of all kinds.
It would mean the world to us if we could start the year off with Scholastic News. I enjoy reading and teaching my students about the environment in which they live. I feel like each week we get to travel to places and learn things that they might not learn about otherwise.
