The softball season is long and the ladies are hard on their uniforms. Red dirt is a real thing and does not completely wash out of the uniforms. Having a set of quality uniforms is about so much more than looking good. It's about coming together as a team and having pride in what you do. This includes having new headgear to protect their eyes from the sun. They don't complain and "suck it up" sometimes better than the boys. This past season we had a player finish a game with a broken hand!
The size is classified as one of the largest of the state and continues to grow every year.
The population of the school is made up of 86% Hispanic, 16% black, and 6% white. The percentage of students on free or reduced price lunch is 94%. The yearbook students view it as almost a second family. They work well together and support each other through all of the ups and downs that come with living in this community.
The Varsity and JV softball squads' schedule is set for the Fall of 2017 at 20 games. This does not include the three tournaments we will play during and at the end of the season. Unfortunately, I was the third coach in three years. Towards the end of the season, the girls had really started coming together and playing together as a team. They were proud of belonging to a team and winning a thriller against their biggest rival was a highlight most will remember for the rest of their lives. With funding being cut left and right, our outlook for getting uniforms for the upcoming season is not good. Acting like you belong to a team is crucial. Getting these new visors will not only free up that money to go to other important equipment, it will also help give these young ladies a sense of pride and community when they take the field. Wearing a uniform and looking like a team is almost as important. Please help them look the part.
