Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Hi! I am a string orchestra teacher in a middle and high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. I work in a low income school, yet my students are inquisitive, motivated, and are eager to learn. Playing a musical instrument can be very expensive. Not only do you need an instrument, but you need music, rosin, a bow, a chin rest, a shoulder rest, etc. Many of my students have to borrow school instruments because they simply cannot afford to buy or rent their own instrument from a music store. One very important tool to playing the violin and viola is to have a shoulder rest. A shoulder rest is padded and fits the shoulder to help hold the violin or viola comfortably in the proper playing position. In this proposal, I am asking for several shoulder rests in different sizes. The cost for each shoulder rest is small, but when combined with the other costs in playing an instrument, many students choose to either use a piece of foam, or no shoulder rest at all! I appreciate your time in reading my proposal and helping my students play wonderful music.
