Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Counselor at a DAEP (alternative) campus. The grade levels range from 2nd grade to 12th grade. The majority of my students receive placement at the campus due to mishaps that occurred as a result of a lack of home teaching and parental supervision. Many of my students get caught up with the wrong group of friends or in the wrong activities in which it leads to a placement at the alternative campus. There are many who are attention seekers because they do not receive the love or attention from parents at home. So many of the students do not have parents due to incarceration or their parents may be on drugs, etc.

All children, regardless of their age or situation, should be given multiple opportunities at success.

Many of the students that come through the DAEP are very smart and intelligent students. However, they've never had any positive influences in their lives. They've never had the parental support that most students are fortunate to have in their families. On a consistent basis, I have students who enter DAEP and improve their behavior, choices and academics as soon as the staff show them that we care.

My Project

I am requesting help for one student. This particular student has struggled in his life, growing up throughout childhood in a single parent home. As a result, his relationship with his mother has not been the strongest. He's experienced less fortunate situations and he has made the wrong choices in the past. Yes, he was given many opportunities before getting it right in which it did take more than once. However, once reality set into this student and he was given another opportunity (that turned out to be the final chance for him based on his personal decision) it was as if the sun began to shine bright in his innocent dark world.

He took advantage of the opportunity and there was no stopping him!!

The student became extremely focused in all of his classes. As he completed classes online in a school program called Edgenuity, he began to complete courses and receive a credit at least every 2-3 weeks. The student worked so hard and so diligently that he was the perfect model student for others in the program. He did not allow any more obstacles to deter him from achieving his goal as he remained on track. He caught up on his credits as well as obtained extra credits and fulfilled all graduation requirements including successfully passing his last STAAR EOC exam.

As of this month, the student has officially graduated from high school and enrolled into a local community college. Due to not having transportation to and from college, he's enrolled in online classes. However, he does not have a computer at home to participate in his classes or complete assignments. Having a computer will enable him the opportunity to continue his education by working toward a college degree, getting a job and becoming productive.
