My Students

My students are at the age where they need to experience the idea of walking in someone else's shoes. Being teenagers (most from middle to upper socio-economic status), it is hard for them to imagine the struggles that others are willing to undergo to obtain an education.

We have three amazing 7th grade classes and two amazing 8th grade classes at our K-8 school.

Being a K-8, our 7th and 8th graders assume a natural role as models to the rest of the school. Since we are a K-8, our 7th and 8th grade program is constantly developing and coming up against obstacles that have never been considered. Our students are becoming high school ready in a small environment, so that often presents it's own set of challenges.

My Project

Students will attend the movie screening of "He Named Me Malala" to go along with doing text studies of her speeches and excerpts from her biography. They will learn how Malala exhibits the idea that one person can be the change and that standing up for what you believe in is difficult, but is rewarding. They also will gain a greater appreciation for the opportunities that they have here in Sacramento, that we often take for granted.

Viewing "He Named Me Malala" will be a powerful, life changing experience for my students.

She is motivational and her story makes even the most skeptical kid realize what is occurring in other areas of the world. I want them to be global citizens that are aware of the cultures and societies that exist.
