Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom comprises students who are working towards greater knowledge of history and literature through examining global issues every day that affect them. The majority of students are below reading level, and one of the biggest challenges is guiding students to build a love of learning.
My students all have the capacity to build strong foundations in education through curiosity, but often lack the extra-curricular opportunities that students from wealthier backgrounds and school districts receive.
They also come to school with a diverse set of struggles, including economic, social, and emotional. They sometimes find it hard to connect their education to their futures. My students are also very bright, creative, and hard working. They also come with a wide variety of learning styles and interests, and the educators they see work to nurture and support various activities and learning styles through diverse experiences and access to quality educational materials. Our school constantly looks for experiences that will help students grow, not only academically, but socially, emotionally, and in their civic understand too.
My Project
Being able to take our whole team of 8th graders to see the inspirational film "He Named Me Malala" will give students the ability to see and interact with knowledge about global education systems, injustice, gender inequality, and the value of access to education. This trip will allow students to build an awareness of the struggles that people around the world go to in order to get an education, and open up a unit for research on a diverse range of topics, such as gender inequality, the Middle East, educational access, violence and terrorism, and the struggle for education.
We hope that this trip will not only open up the opportunity for these entry points of study, but also provide our students with inspiration and motivation to continue their own studies through the struggles they face.
Malala Yousafzai is one of the most inspirational young women in the world, and the opportunity to learn more about her, the obstacles that she has overcome, and her work to build equal educations for all young people globally can have a profound impact upon my students.
