Help me give my students the necessary technology equipment such as an iPad and GoPro to make valuable videos about our kuleana (responsibility) to protect and care for the ʻāina and itʻs creatures!
In our Hawaiian language immersion 4th and 5th grade combined class, we use the knowledge of our kūpuna (ancestors) to instill the valuable lessons we look to for guidance and live by as kānaka Hawaiʻi. The ʻōlelo noʻeau, wise saying of our kūpuna, He Aliʻi Ka ʻĀina, He Kauwā Ke Kanaka (The land is the chief, the people is itʻs servants) is the foundation of our learning.
We love using all kinds of technology to enhance our learning of the Hawaiian language, culture, history, and place-based projects of the past into todayʻs 21st century world.
We also love sharing our learning with the younger Hawaiian immersion keiki, our ʻohana and community, and our entire school community as well. To do this, we want to be able to document our learning and adventures by using the video equipment to record and then create videos to share with others.
We are currently working on a manu Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Bird) project because in Hawaiʻi and here on Maui, some of the endemic rare manu Hawaiʻi are disappearing right before our eyes. We have decided to use our project to hoʻonaʻauao, educate others and the public at large. We will create video PSAʻs to help hoʻonaʻauao and bring awareness to some of the critical issues and concerns that are causing the demise of these wonderful creatures such as predation by cats, mongoose, rats, mosquitoes, and habitat loss. The video equipment will be instrumental in getting our message out to the public to show them that “He Aliʻi Ka ʻĀina, He Kauwā Ke Kanaka” and we have a kuleana (responsibility) to protect and care for the ʻāina and itʻs creatures!
