My Students

Nikola Tesla said: "I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success" With this equipment I will begin turning a middle school classroom into a Makerspace for grades 4 through 8.

My students live in rural New Hampshire.

We have solid athletic programs, excellent academic programs, and a supportive community. What our district does not have is any extra money. We have stretched and worked, and been creative in order to develop a program of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) based learning in the technology education space for our middle school, but what we haven't been able to do is come up with the funds to purchase equipment for exploration and invention. During study halls I have student coming into my room looking for extra technological projects to work on, I would love to help them. I would love to allow them to let their creativity soar while developing an interest in science, engineering, and technology, but all of my high tech equipment is in use for my regular classes.

My Project

These materials will be used by my students to experiment with technology. They will be coming in outside of normal class time to learn programming and invention with the Raspberry Pi. They will learn how programming, science, and mathematics can be used to effect the world through circuitry with the Makey Makey, and they will be able to learn how to create their own animated videos describing their experiences with the Hue. By the time these students hit high school they will have a solid background in programming, an understanding of physical computing, and the ability to articulate their thoughts in a medium other than writing. They will learn project management, and problem solving while using the information they are given in their math and science classrooms on projects they are excited about.

In my classroom, my problems are just the opposite of what normally occurs.

I have children excited to learn new things during their free time. They want to learn about advanced technology, they are capable of learning about advanced technology, we simply don't have the technological tools to assist them. I can do the work, I am happy to keep their excitement and passion for learning high. We just need a little help getting the right tools into their hands. Please, help me make the next Edison.
