Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At CLES, we focus on individualized learning where each student is academically pushed in regards to their personal learning level. Most students are neighborhood students who face many difficulties outside of school. It is a Title I school in Providence, RI where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. Students look at school as a place where potential is limitless. They look forward to using iPads, computers, audio books, and creating projects to make learning fun. Our classroom is a place of respect, care, being mindful, and diversity. Not only do I care for my students, but they care for me. This positive relationship gives them hope to a better tomorrow.
We are a 100% free breakfast and lunch school that encourages community members to become involved as often as possible.
Community outreach is extremely imperative in creating a school with a positive school culture. Students come together and work with members of society who help motivate and teach them.
My Project
Kindergarten students should have time to explore hands on and have time to "fail" during exploration. This will give them determination and stamina skills to try again and again until they succeed. I am asking for two iPads for a technology station during station rotation. This will allow students who are visual learners to watch fun videos, explore apps, and play academic games. The translucent dominoes, counters, and double dice will be used during math stations in which students can play games to help them learn math. They could use the dominoes by counting the dots, ordering them lowest to greatest or to compare numbers. Translucent counters could be used by students who need a visual to count and the double dice may be used for students to engage in math games during math stations. All of the materials I am requesting serve as visual hands on manipulatives that will better help students master math concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Having the freedom to fail is important to innovation but even more important to the process are the traits of resiliency and grit.
These two characteristics need to be continuously developed as we look for new and better ways to serve our students. iPads academic games, dominoes, counters, and double dice are all aids to teaching math skills hands on. Students need to try different math concepts, fail, and try something else until they find or create a solution that works.
Learning is messy, and we have to be comfortable to allow students to take risk, fail, grow, and revise. Once students take risks, they are more likely to try their own ideas and stretch themselves and their students. Giving students license to take risks by tapping into their abilities helps create a space where innovative ideas flourish.
