Having Supplies at the Beginning of the Year Would be Lovely

My students need crayons, colored pencils, writing journals, and ink cartridges for their photo printer, so that they may write stories and draw about their stories.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Imagine coming to school on the very first day excited, happy, OK a little anxious, and finding out that your classroom does not have supplies. Our district often does not give us supplies for our students, but the children would like to walk in and start working. I would like to see that too.

My students are young, urban children who do not have much at home.

They deserve to come to school and find their classroom well stocked with great supplies for writing. I have a Photo-smart printer which we received last year from gracious donors, but it is out of ink. I want to make my children into excellent writers, but we usually do not receive journals for them to use until later in the year. I use the draw or photo and write method, because it is easier for them to write about their own pictures. Last year's class loved taking pictures, printing them, and writing about them. Their work became very good. They love to create when they first get to school and I like to capture that interest and hold it. That way, they always ask to write. The sight word journals will help them learn to write with sight words. Children love to use different mediums when them work. The colored pencils and crayons will enhance their work. You will see that when they write to you.

My Project

You should see the look on the faces of urban children when they walk into a well stocked classroom. It is like a party for them. They cannot wait to use the materials. They will love taking their own digital pictures and printing them on the Photo-smart printer. We will go outside a great deal, so they will have a lot of pictures to write about. We just need ink for the printer. I have a great deal of paper. I requested the colored pencils and crayons with a great deal of bright colors, so that they would be able to make choices in their colors. Younger children love to use a lot of color in their work. I like to have my children writing as soon as possible. Imagine being a young writer and getting a great draw and write and a sight word journal from your teacher. Imagine having your teacher tell you that people who do not know you want you to do so well in school, that they bought them for you. They will be thrilled. With these materials, my students will become great writers.

As a Donor's Choose donor, you have the power to give urban children these wonderful materials to help them be the best writers that they are able to be.

They will learn to love to write. My classes always learn to love to write, because I make it fun for them. They love to draw and write. The drawing helps relax them for the writing which goes with it. They draw what they know and then, they write. With the photos from our printer, they may write about what they see around them.
