This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a west side school in Chicago that has 98% free lunch for students. My students are very high energy and spirited and super-excited to come to school. Because of limited monies and resources in the neighborhood, we have to be very creative with the resources and funds we do receive every year to extend their learning.
My students are up for any challenges but they need some support to help them be all that they can be as productive citizens, ever-growing learners, and competent business people.
My Project
One of the ways we support our students at school is by providing breakfast, lunch, and a snack. Being at school for eight hours is a lot for a 3 or 4 year old, and they tend to get fidgety during the day so having a snack bucket would help ease some of those fidgety spells. Many students also miss breakfast because they come to school late. Hot food does not sit well for an hour, so having a snack bucket available would give them a quick treat to hold them over until lunchtime. We were able to give students snacks at the beginning of the school year, and our attendance spiked on the days when we had snacks available (three days a week).
