Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We all know we use math skills everyday, but for students math concepts can be so hard to master. Especially when they don't have the necessary materials to support their learning, or the materials provided by the curriculum are not interesting or fun.
I teach a bilingual first grade class.
Many of my students are newcomers; they come from low income families where both parents have to work to make ends meet. Many attend the after school program because there is no one at home to take care of them when school gets out. The school is located in a high violence area, 100% reduced or free lunch is provided for the students. The school is old; teachers have the challenge of making the classroom look inviting and welcoming even though everything in there is old.
My Project
Math concepts can be hard for students to learn, even if they have a solid number sense foundation. I am always looking for creative, engaging and fun activities to teach math concepts. All these resources I am requesting will provide support for my students; they will make math fun and engaging. If students don't have number sense they cannot count thus making any math skill difficult to learn and master. The abacus I am requesting will provide support in helping my visual learners see a one to one correspondence. It will also help them practice addition and subtraction skills. The books I am requesting will make a connection between math and literature. With all the other resources I am requesting students will learn counting skills, place value, memorize addition by practicing fact families (Fact Family House), will practice graphing, telling time, and using money. While learning math skills they will also be learning to work in small group or with a partner. The chart I am requesting will also provide English vocabulary to my bilingual class.
Math skills are important to master.
It is used everyday in our lives. All these materials will provide a fun, entertaining way for my students to practice the concepts being taught in the class. Students learn more when they are engaged, and I know that these games and visual resources will help my students master the skills necessary to succeed in their grade level but also give them a solid foundation in math and will teach them that math can be fun.
