My students need unifix cubes and collection items to help with counting, picture books to introduce new concepts and Rekenreks to ensure math fluency.
Every child deserves a quality education. - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
Help my students acquire a quality education that will lead to opportunities and success.
My 3rd grade classroom is composed of 20 students.
In our school 95% of students qualified for free and reduced price lunch and with limited funding the math supplies they need to develop conceptual understanding are not available to them. Most of my students are English Language Learners and school does not come easy for them, but their hard work resilience and flexibility continues to inspire me. Here are a few statistics about the District of Clark County.
1) Less than half of students will graduate from high school
2) African American and Latino/Hispanic children drop out at twice the rate of their Caucasian peers
3) Nevada ranks 50th in high school graduation rate
I have students that dream of being scientist, game makers and teachers. For the majority of them, math is their favorite subject. Without the necessary math supplies, they will not be able to compete with other children who come from more affluent classrooms and will not be able to reach their dreams for the future.
My Project
The transition to Common Core State Standards with limited resources has been a challenge for both teacher and students. My students range in abilities. I have some students who came to me with very little number sense. In order for them to move forward I am asking for the collections of counting materials such as; shells, washers, aquarium gravel, buttons, toothpicks and unfix cubes. The math picture books will be used to introduce new concepts like geometry, multiplication, division and more in ways they can relate to. By 3rd grade, students should know their math facts in addition and subtraction, my students have not gotten there yet. The Rekenreks, dominoes and ten frames will help them not only learn the facts but go beyond memorization.
My students continue to experience hardships at home and at school.
Because of where they live, the odds are against them. By you helping fund this project, you can help break unfair circumstances and give my students a chance to compete in this society and help them reach their goals for the future.
