Students and teachers at all three of the schools where I work continue to be flexible in adapting to the mastery learning model. Students who come to my schools are sometimes behind in progress toward graduation. Many are encountering struggles at school and outside of school. Keeping the students motivated and engaged in learning is a challenge and a priority.
Engaging lessons are necessary in content areas and in mentoring.
This is especially important given the struggles our student population encounter.
My Project
The Center for Teaching and Learning says “Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills and promotes meaningful learning experiences.”
In order to use strategies for student engagement, teachers must know those strategies.
Thus, teachers having access to books about student engagement strategies, like the ones in this project, will directly benefit students. Publisher information about some of the books includes: "create engaging and effective lessons", "guide to deliver content creatively", and "create interesting and life-changing opportunities for learning." Strategies and lesson plans and ideas included in these books can be implemented in the classroom to help motivate and engage the students. In addition, students can use the books as a resource for ideas to create projects for their required performance tasks and capstone projects.
The project also includes microphones and isolation shields for students to create podcasts for performance tasks and capstone projects and a board game for mentors to use that will have all players active all of the time.
