This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have students that are from high poverty families. My students are also living in single-parent households. My students deserve the best opportunities that I can provide for them. Our school population has many disadvantages such as no permanent residence to displacement due to fires, etc.
My students look for stability in their school environment to supplement the meager surroundings at home.
My students come each day with love and eagerness to learn. It is really a safe haven for them.
Many of my students have to share a bed with their siblings.
My Project
My students come from meager surroundings. Providing them with high quality, high interest books that they can relate to will provide motivation for my students to want to pick up that book and learn about what is between those pages. Most students these days are so integrated with technology that books seem antiquated.
I want to reintroduce a love of reading authentic books, not just digital texts.
Helping me to provide these books for my students will be life altering for them. Most of my students do not have any books in their homes. Allowing them to borrow books from my classroom library to read will provide an escape for them to other places that only books can provide.
