My Students

Over the past nine years my computer lab has undergone undergone a STEAM evolution. What started as a small fourth and fifth grade FLL (First LEGO League) Robotics Team, intentionally morphed into a burgeoning STEAM school-wide project all its own. The initial cluster of students who followed the engineering process while exploring interdisciplinary and project-based learning, now teach their peers, encompassing a reach and influence that goes well beyond the STEAM Robotics Team itself.

The STEAM ambassador project started two years ago with fourth and fifth grade STEAM Robotics students visiting kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms in order to share their STEAM projects in a smaller more intimate setting.

During these classroom visits, fourth and fifth grade students answer both teacher and student questions, talk through their design thinking and illuminate the cycle of improving upon their STEAM ‘products.’ All 600 students are, therefore, exposed to the exciting and relevant world of STEAM. Through our STEAM ambassador project students teach students and show first hand how enriching this type of learning can be.

My students are a diverse group of enthusiastic boys and girls who love to explore, take creative risks, innovate and think deeply.

My Project

My STEAM Robotics Club does not have a budget so I have aquired most of my equipment through a few small grants that I applied for over the years. There are 24 4th and 5th grade students in my STEAM Robtoics club that share 3 Sphero+ devices.

Adding 2 of the latest Sphero Bolts would enable more of my students to learn through doing, such as testing their out their ideas, taking creative risks and engaging in the iterative process to improve their thinking and desired results.

With the addition of this equipment my students would be able to expand upon their explorations, creative thinking, and have more opportunties to share their new learning and enthusiasm with their peers.
