This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a reading specialist, I work with struggling readers in first and second grade. Reading does not come easily to many of my students. These students will become good readers, but they need a little help.

We have both academic challenges and significant socioeconomic challenges.

At my school 100% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning it is categorized as "highest poverty." All students deserve the same educational opportunities, and my students are at a disadvantage.

I try to give my students quality instruction, quality materials, and a quality learning environment.

My Project

Reading fluency involves reading smoothly, in a way similar to how we speak. It is an important reading skill...fluent readers tend to comprehend better. Struggling readers often have a difficult time reading fluently.

We are requesting countdown timers and batteries to run them that will allow my students to time themselves while they read, so that they can increase their reading speed and subsequently increase their reading fluency.

Students will be able to try to "beat their time," so that they have can a "good time learning." It feels like a game to use a timer and to have a competition. However, my students will be getting reading practice and increasing their reading skills in the process.
