This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My kindergarten students come in with a wide range of knowledge. Some have been to preschool and some have never stepped foot inside a classroom. They come from various social and economical background. Many of our students are homeless. 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and for some, school is their safe haven.
The school school relies on partners to help fund the food and clothing pantry and outside help to donate supplies throughout the year.
These donations help our student's families live month to month. For some of the student's, the meals they get at school are the only meals they eat.
My classroom is a place the students feel safe and comfortable to be themselves. We are a family.
My Project
I started flexible seating in my classroom last year and noticed a huge improvement in student engagement. They were able to sit for longer periods of time and they had more choices of what type of seats best fit their learning. Children naturally need to move especially five year olds.
Students are more engaged and focused when they are in an environment where they have the freedom to make a choice of where and how they want to sit during the day.
I have asked for 4 more wobble chairs. They work wonders for the students who have difficulty sitting still in a chair. I wanted to get a few more new types of seating so I asked for some different types of yoga balls as well as a free standing desk. I think that will be popular.
In addition to the flexible seating, I am asking for an iPad mini for the children to use in literacy and math centers. There are so many wonderful games that I have purchased that I can use with the iPad to enhance their learning in a fun and engaging way.
