Help me give my students first-hand experience using a 3D printer in class! A 3D printer was donated to us but we need ink or filament to actually put it to work!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My scholars are in the prime of their development in their middle school years. My class touches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Our school is STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) focused so all scholars get a chance to experience the different types of technology out there.
Our school has recently been assigned as a Title 1 school which in some ways is wonderful for our scholars but in regards to elective education, funds are extremely limited.
The scholars that I teach come from very diverse environments but they all have one thing in common...they are eager to learn. They flourish through unconventional learning techniques such as hands-on demonstrations. Paper, pen, and Chromebooks are all wonderful tools, but as soon as you place the lesson in their hands they light up!
My Project
A kind educator donated a like-new 3D printer to our CTE (career technical education) classes, but in order to see them at work we need ink (known as filament in the 3D world). My automation and robotics class as well as my science of technology class both spend a lot of time learning about engineering, design, and innovation. When I relayed the news that we would be experimenting with a 3D printer, they couldn't hold back the excitement! That's saying a lot when dealing with middle schoolers.
By utilizing the printer, the scholars not only get to tap into their engineering capabilities, they also get to recognize and explore their creativity from a STEM perspective.
Hence the reason we are requesting such a variety of filament. I don't want the scholars to hold back. I want them to be able to investigate all the 3D printer has to offer and consider what they can add one day!
