My physical education classroom is a place of challenge, movement, and activity. Students spend the semester learning about movement concepts, fitness, and relaying the knowledge to their own lives.
I teach in a rural high school that serves 1,300 students.
We have a very diverse student population with 38% free and reduced lunch, 15% special education, and 8% English language learners.
They enjoy moving and being active. Many of them receive free and reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. My students come to my classroom from all over the world, many from difficult and different situations. They want to be successful, but they need the tools necessary to do so.
My Project
I am fortunate to teach at a school that has a swimming pool available to the physical education classes. This resource allows us to engage with students in a non-traditional space, all while providing lessons and experiences that translate into their world outside of the classroom. However, many of our students are not strong swimmers, and struggle to participate because of the unknowns. For example, when a student puts their face in the water and closes their eyes, they are unable to really experience the skill, and often begin to shut down and back away from activity. This feeling of uncertainty can be enough for some students to stop participating altogether.
The goggles and nose plugs will help my students be active swimmers, increase their self-confidence, and participate in new learning experiences.
By donating to this project, you will be taking away that feeling of uncertainty, and replacing it with support and resources that will allow my students to flourish.
