Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a national AVID demonstration school, which means that our students are all AVID students. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
One important organizational tool for AVID is the interactive notebook.
It allows our students to take ownership of their own learning and gives them a way to prepare for advanced coursework in college by learning the process of Cornell note taking. Interactive notebooks are used in all classes including my math class!
Our students are historically underserved and unrepresented in 4-year universities, but are determined and very hard working! If given the academic support that they need, they are going to succeed in college and in a global society.
My Project
My 8th grade math students complete various classroom learning activities that accommodate their different learning styles. Kinesthetic activities such as scavenger hunts are loved by my students but become challenging for them to complete while traveling across the room carrying a record sheet and scrap paper. By having a dry erase board and expo markers, they will be able to work at each station and keep track of the record sheets with ease! Students enjoy using the dry erase markers, so it will be a wonderful engagement tool as well! Do you have clipboards? Then your math class can travel!
