My school is an urban, year-round elementary school with diverse students and staff. Our students range from kindergarteners to fifth graders. There are many students who are bilingual, and others who are learning English for the first time. From "traditional" homes to students who are homeless, our students work together in harmony. We take pride in how our school community welcomes newcomers, while maintaining healthy relationships with students and staff.
Our students are energetic, 21st century learners with creative and flexible minds.
They love to learn in many different ways. Being a year-round school, students attend class throughout the year, with small breaks each quarter. The breaks tend to energize both the children and the staff. When both come back to class, they are both ready to learn.
Our school is like a sunflower... it flourishes with a lot of love and care and always faces the sunshine, soaking in as much knowledge as possible!
My Project
In our world today, children need to learn to be creative and innovative thinkers. They are studying for their future, a future where many jobs have yet to be created. As a result, it is imperative that we give children many opportunities and experiences that will help each become productive and meaningful citizens of our world. Therefore, my school is creating a space, a MakerSpace, where children can learn by integrating the arts, technology, science, engineering, and math. Our MakerSpace will inspire students to become participatory learners who will uncover their talents, needs, and interests by making, producing, solving, creating, collaborating, and thinking.
The environment of a MakerSpace should be conducive to the students' learning.
The furniture needs to be welcoming, as well as functional, and just plain fun! I am asking for Wobble chairs, plastic stack stools, and stability balls for our MakerSpace. These chairs are appealing and unconventional, yet designed for comfort and durability. The children will know that what they do in the MakerSpace promotes learning through play and experimentation.
The space, in addition to the physical chairs, will offer tools and materials that will encourage the students to create, rather than to consume. The environment will strive to maintain an open culture in which every student is a hands-on contributor and feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. It will be a place where conversations and interactions will be encouraged, which in turn will spark new thoughts that will feel more like play than work.
I am asking for your support in creating our MakerSpace by providing the room with chairs including stability ball chairs with legs, stacking stools in various colors, and Wobble chairs. Come have a seat in our Makers Space!
