This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I'm the librarian of a Title I high school in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Our student population consists of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth-grade students. All of our student body receives free lunch. Many are reluctant readers who read more than two levels below grade level. However, despite the obstacles they face, our students are curious and motivated to learn. They just need more tools to encourage them to do so. They are incredibly creative and talented kids who are determined to make their mark in the world.

My Project

Our school has a variety of students, and many of them LOVE Halloween. This time of year they like to put their creativity and performing arts skills to use and develop a haunted house. This will be our third attempt, and each year gets better and better. A few masks, props, and black lights would definitely elevate our haunted house!

Our students (and students from other schools) look forward to this every year.

Since this is purely an extra-curricular activity, there isn't a budget provided. However, our students enjoy it so much that we want to help them get some additional materials to assist in their dramatic endeavors.
