My students need Black Plastic top hats and a variety of craft supplies such as paint, glitter, glue, pipe cleaners, and pom poms for a "Hats of to Science" activity.
Have you ever thought back on some of your time spent in the classroom and wondered if your teacher could have made it more fun? Well that is exactly what I plan to do with a science art activity that will allow the students imagination to soar!
We are a science magnet academy located in Alabama, with about 200 5th graders who are eager to learn.
Just like any 9,10, or 11 year old they are full of energy, so what can be better than to use those eager kids and their energy in a special hands on science lesson. This lesson will make the subject come to life for them! The will be engaged from the beginning until the end! Students will have the chance to take control of the lesson and present their given vocabulary word anyway that hey see fit. This in turn will make more of an impact on the students. Our fifth graders will be able to collaborate with their classmates and aid each other in the presentation of their particular word. Once the hats are complete we will band together and parade through the school, allowing other grade levels to our "Parade of Hats". The students will then get to place their hats out for display! Once the excitement is in the air, there will be no holding these kids back.
My Project
Students will each be assigned a vocabulary word from science. They will get the definition of their assigned word and come up with a plan to decorate their top hat to represent their word. They will be responsible for creating the design, gathering the materials, and putting it all together, with the teacher as the facilitator of the activity. Once completed the students will present their hats, and then participate in a school wide parade to show how we take our "Hats off to Science". Materials that will be needed to make his happen for the kids are black plastic top hats, paint, glitter, glue, pipe cleaners, pom poms, and other odd and end art supplies. Their imaginations will get the opportunity to soar using these materials to bring their vocabulary words to life and then to take it a step further by thinking out side of the box on how to incorporate their idea onto their top hat! This will surely be an activity/lesson they will remember!
Donations that we receive will allow me to provide the materials needed for the students to take a science lesson outside of the box and bring it to life.
This will ensure that the lesson will not only teach the vocabulary, but allow for the students to have fun, be engaged, and make memories that will last forever.
