My students need a chicken coop and other supplies needed for poultry care to establish a self-sustaining chicken farm at our school.

"We are true Trojan Heroes". This is the motto we recite each morning as my students pledge to be Hard-working, Enthusiastic about learning, Respectful, and Organized. Our Ettrick students are all true heroes in my eyes; they do their very best every day despite over 70% of our school being on free lunch and many receiving weekend food bag assistance. They are overcoming obstacles and learning despite their challenges. I am so proud to be a part of their school story!
This year our school incubated and hatched eggs in the school library with our phenomenal librarian. A local poultry farmer came to teach the children about raising chickens as a profession. The children were so engaged in learning through this experience that we want to extend that learning even further next year.
We need a chicken coop to place in our school courtyard and other supplies for caring for our own small school flock of chickens.
The eggs incubated and hatched in our library next year will then be raised and tended by teachers and students across the grade levels. We will enlist the expert advise of a poultry farmer in establishing and caring for our flock. Students will practice math and science skills, as well as develop a close connection to where their food comes from. Students will get first hand experience in animal needs and characteristics through researching how to care for the hens. Students will show responsibility and ownership by feeding the chickens, cleaning up the coop, and caring for the hens. Students will sell the eggs from their chickens to teachers and local families and use that income to support their flock's needs. They will learn important economic lessons about goods and services, producers and consumers, and supply and demand through this experience.
This project will help the children reach their goal of learning how to become self-sustaining chicken farmers! Being able to raise your own food and use that as a source of income could be a game changer for our low-income students. This could be the experience that creates a passion for farming as a career!
