Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I might remember. Involve me and I'll understand." -Confucius
My Kindergarteners are curious students who enthusiastically cheer whenever I say we're going to do scientific research.
They ask a lot of questions as we seek to understand the world together as a close-knit family of learners.
Our class is part of a racially, culturally and ethnically diverse school community in east Oakland. 92% of our school population qualifies for free or reduced lunch and 59% are English Language Learners.
My Project
By acquiring an egg incubator and a chick brooder, we would be able to study the life cycle of oviparous animals in a way that would deeply involve our class. Books and multimedia could only supplement the enduring understandings we would garner from this shared experience.
We're ready to record daily findings in our science journals and learn integrated phonics, writing, and math skills through this rich science content.
In a world of high-stakes skills testing, teaching content sometimes falls secondary.
I believe providing learning opportunities through science will actually allow students to meaningfully apply and practice literacy and math skills. Please help fuel my little scientists' eagerness to learn through this experience they'll never forget. Thank you.
