This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love to come to school, for many of my students school is a getaway from what is going on at home and is the only structure that they get daily.
I teach on a Title 1 campus, which means many of the students come from a low income household and 90% of the school gets free or reduced price lunch.
Many of my students were severely impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August. Many students have been displaced and are still displaced from the hurricane.
My students have really big hearts and care a lot for each other. They love to learn and tell others all about the learning that they have done.
My Project
In first grade students learn about many different life cycles. One of the life cycles that we learn about is that of a chicken. The students have all been exposed to seeing the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog.
But the life cycle of a chicken is not as familiar, this would make a great opportunity for the students to be able to see exactly how the chick breaks through the egg and how they survive once they are born.
There is another employee on my campus who has chickens, and has offered some fertilized eggs so that all of the first graders can witness how a chick forms in the egg and how the chick lives after breaking through the egg. My students need an egg incubator so that we can keep the eggs at an appropriate temperature so that they can see the process of the eggs hatching. Once the eggs hatch and the chicks are strong enough, the employee that I work with has offered to take the chicks back home.
