My class is going to study the Gary Paulsen novel "Hatchet". The novel is about a boy who, due to a plane crash, is stranded in the Canadian Wilderness. He needs to overcome many challenges while trying to survive. I have many students who would greatly benefit from the book on tape/cd. Those students could listen to the chapters at the listening center in my classroom. They would be able to participate better in the whole class discussion and would get more out of the literature unit. This would be an excellent resource for ALL of my students. I am also requesting the Hatchet teacher's guide. This guide will help expand our discussion of "Hatchet". At the end of the unit I would like to show the students (with parent permission, of course) the video entitled "A Cry in the Wild". The video has a different title, but it is based on "Hatchet". After viewing the video, the class will do Venn diagrams comparing and contrasting the movie with the book. All of my students will be participating in the unit. These items will really help my students to understand the complexities in this unit.
