My students need stools, a table, balance balls and a wobble chair for an inviting place to critically think together and work on real world mathematical situations.
Imagine waking up and stepping on the floor and you feel water beneath your feet. Imagine being rescued by the Cajun Navy in the middle of the night. Imagine not being able to live in your home or attend your school. Imagine leaving some of your family behind while you are being rescued. Imagine leaving your family pet behind and never seeing him again. Each of these stories were shared by my students, my kids. My kids are the most loving and caring seventh graders I have ever met in my life. We live in a district that was severely affected by Hurricane Harvey. Not only did Hurricane Harvey steal the homes of many of my students, Harvey stole their home away from home. Harvey stole our CLASSROOM. My kids had to adjust to sharing another campus, with students from two other campuses. We are now back “home” but, it is not the same.
My Project
My kids need a space to work together collaboratively. I teach seventh grade academic math and seventh grade honors math. Dinner time at the table is important for the family unit and my students dinner in my class will also happen at the group table. It may not be food specifically but, it will feed the soul and the brain. My wish for the few items requested will inspire and keep my kids enthusiasm soaring. My students will use the dry erase table we are in hopes of receiving before school, during school and after school for group work and tutoring. This table will enhance their learning and eagerness in math. My kids helped pick out the table they wanted for our class. The stools will be used at the dry erase table and around the class for flexible seating during independent work and lectures. The wobble chair and yoga balls will be an option for all of my students. Research shows that the wobble chair will help students with ADHD and Autism during learning. Math is not always a favorite subject for junior high students but, when they leave my class I want them to look forward to coming back the next day and learning.
Learning will soar with an inviting, exciting table and seating to share ideas, have discussions and take pride in their "home".
