My students come from diverse backgrounds (95% minority), yet they are unified in the pursuit of academic excellence. Our school provides a safe community for creative, emotional, and social opportunities. Students learn employable skills like goal-setting, teamwork, and responsibility while making lifelong friendships.
I teach at a school in central Virginia where 100% of students can receive both free breakfast and free lunch.
My students are 75% low income but 100% talent! Last year, both the orchestra and guitar ensemble earned "superior" ratings at the Kings Dominion Festival, taking home the first and second place trophies respectively. Our school works creatively to assure that no student misses out on an educational opportunity due to money, and DonorsChoose has been "instrumental" in making that happen!
My Project
Harp? Is that a harp? Like angels play? Do we have harp at this school? Absolutely, we have harp! Several neighboring elementary schools offer introduction to harp using little baby harps called "harpsicles." From time to time, we have middle schoolers arrive with previous harp experience, and they want to play the harp in the orchestra. Our school system is incredibly lucky to house one of our district's coveted lever harps. This is really special because lever harps run about $4500! Being a low income school, our aspiring harpists certainly can't afford such an expensive instrument for at home practice, but this project seeks to solve the at home practice issue!
Your kind donations will provide my students with a lightweight, portable baby harp called a "harpsicle" at a fraction of the cost of a full size lever harp.
For a long time, I've wanted to get a portable harp that my students can take home. The COVID-19 school closure has made the need for this instrument greater than ever. My poor harpist is sitting at home right now with no way to practice her instrument. By having a second harp in our inventory, more harpists will be able to join our school orchestra. When we have multiple harpists in our program, they will take turns checking out the harp for a weekend of music making at home. I've also requested two music books and an electronic tuner to support the harp program. Thank you in advance for supporting our school orchestra.
