Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time that you realized that there is a past that has shaped the world we live in? My students are beginning to grasp that, however, I am finding it difficult to obtain materials that they are able to comprehend.
Currently, I teach in a Title 1 school in an area that is lacking in a great many resources.
The students I work with each day find it challenging to deal with their present circumstances, much less begin to delve into the past. When it comes time to talk about the history that is part of the curriculum, I see the hesitation to open up the textbooks. They are not differentiated and this leaves students unwilling to try to uncover the materials.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are for my students to use during their own independent reading sessions. The classroom materials are not differentiated and that leaves them at a loss when it comes to understanding the curriculum that is being covered. I am requesting sets of books about the Revolutionary War and Civil War that are leveled. The material will be placed directly into the hands of the students who need them and will use them to uncover the past. Students will have access to the materials during the Social Studies lessons so that can refer to material that is geared towards their individual reading level.
It is necessary to know the past that is attached to you in order to change the future that we are approaching.
Please give students the opportunity to understand their pasts so that they can help in shaping their futures.
