This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better" - Albert Einstein
Living in a small urban city, my students have never experienced the grandeur of mountains, midnight stars and towering redwood trees.
Experiencing the outdoors for five days in Yosemite National Park will teach my students the importance of conservation and their ability to change the world.
My school is a charter school in a community overrun by gangs, drugs, crime, and poverty. However, at my school, we are dedicated to helping all of our students graduate and not only attend but achieve success in college. All of our graduating classes achieved 100% acceptance to four-year colleges.
Students in the Outdoor Adventurer program are selected through an intense three-round interview process and they meet every week to prepare for their environmental stewardship and community leadership experiences. They are eager to learn about and experience the wonders of nature; many of them have never enjoyed these opportunities.
My Project
Participants in this program gain valuable leadership and teamwork skills as they explore nature together. The trip to Yosemite helps them to build trusting relationships and confidence as they push each other to higher levels of achievement. Students become experts at environmental conservation and build the skills necessary to bring their learning back to their school and community. These experiences are both unforgettable and life-changing. Upon their return to school, students complete an outreach project to share their experiences and to promote sustainable practices on campus.
It is a rare for our students to leave their community to see the endless possibilities that await them beyond.
Participants in this program return with the belief that they can accomplish things they never dreamed of doing. One student said she was no longer afraid of attending college because she knew she could conquer anything. Please help our students harness nature to change their lives and the world.
