Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My seventh grade students entered middle school this fall as struggling and reluctant readers. They have been turned off by outdated novels that do not reflect their lives. However, the work of a local author is quickly grabbing their attention. Walter Dean Myers, a Harlem native, writes powerful and poetic books for and about teenagers. I purchased copies of Monster and Scorpions, two of my favorites, which my students devoured. They read more than was assigned each night, and came in the next morning clamoring about the characters. My students would be thrilled to continue on their odyssey of reading. However, I don't have, and can't afford to buy, more class sets of Myers' novels. I would be thrilled to put well-written, meaningful books into the hands of my seventh grade blossoming readers.
