We have two first grades in an elementary school on the west side of Green Bay. We are a neighborhood school with 50 first graders in two classrooms. Sixty-three percent of our students receive free/reduced-price lunch. Our classrooms have students with special needs as well as English language learners.
First graders are very busy, active students.
They can learn better when they have the opportunity to sit wherever makes them comfortable. They need appropriate furniture to help them be great learners. We have some seating options already and they have shown how much they enjoy them. That is why I would like to offer them more options.
My Project
My students like to choose where they sit to work. Having more seating options available will help them choose a type of seating that helps them to focus and learn better. Traditional desks and chairs don't really work for our students anymore. Some like to sit on the floor and work so having the balance discs, lap tables and comfy floor seats will give them some options. Our classroom needs to be more open and the furniture needs to meet the students' needs and be more flexible instead of clogging up all of the space in our room. Students do work independently as well as in groups so having more options will help with this.
