Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a small community that strives for the ultimate success of the students. Many of the students are in the low economic situations and having a safe, comfortable space at school will add to their sense of security.
Our school recently became a full STEAM school but lacks enough resources for our low-income students.
Some do not come to school with the tools needed for success. They see the school as their second home and have a great respect for their school and community.
My Project
These additions to our class will enhance what is taking place already at a greater scale. My students have a couch and a beanbag currently and are the go-to "popular" areas for independent work.
They have shown to be more independent and productive when finding their own spaces when given the option other than the traditional desks.
The addition of these pieces will also offer more options for my larger class so that this " home away from home" becomes their space to explore and learn and laying more foundation for independence while adjusting to each child's need and preference.
Lap boards and cushions provide spaces for those that enjoy working on the floor and still be able to produce neat work and find comfort. Many of kids work best standing up, so the bar table would be a perfect place to be productive without taking up too much room. The rug and coffee table would provide a low table with comfortable flooring for students to gather and work on projects. Rounding it off is a great place to read a good book and collaborating on group projects, a couch. If these pieces sound like something that belongs in a home, they are. My classroom is my student/s second home and I want it to become the environment where they can take ownership and work in a welcoming ambiance.
