I teach in a low income, rural school district. We struggle with raising our reading scores on standardized testing and are revamping our jr. high curriculum this year to a workshop model to better address our math and English challenges. One of the first ways to raise reading scores is to get students to read.
Our students claim to hate reading and our low test scores bear that out.
Despite how much they hate to read my current 8th graders LOVED the Giver, almost without exception. Some of my students were so interested in The Giver that they have since read the rest or most of the rest of the series! Not bad for kids who HATE to read.
My Project
My students LOVED The Giver, but we spent a great deal of time repairing their paperback copies of the book on a nearly daily basis. All of our copies have broken bindings and loose pages. For students who already hate to read, this is disheartening.
I have found a book that hooks my students almost without exception and I want to give them better quality copies to encourage their reading.
It will also save time for actually reading and studying this book rather than book repair. Our district does not have the money to replace the books at this time.
