I serve twenty-four kindergarten students who live in the heart of the mountains of Kentucky. They are bright, energetic, and very eager learners. They are at a critical time in their lives, the beginning stages of reading, math, and developing socially. I strive to make learning fun and engaging for all of my students. It is such a joy to watch as they gain new skills.
Since kindergarten is the springboard for knowledge, I want to ensure that my students will be prepared for the future.
As I think about our school, I think about students who have passed through the doors of my classroom. I want our school to be the best and have the best of everything. My students come from homes that are low income but that are rich in love! All of them receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
Teaching in a kindergarten classroom has its challenges. One challenge that I face daily is motivating my students to complete tasks assigned to them quietly and in a timely manner. Students at this age are easily distracted and sometimes need incentives to complete their work. Oral reassurance is given, but at times, it seems to be lacking. That is where the tangible incentives come in.
My students are hard workers and need to be rewarded for their hard work.
The stickers and treats will be used to motivate them to give their very best to each task or lesson they attempt. My goal is to build self-sufficient and self-motivated students. I feel that rewarding them with extrinsic rewards will help accomplish this goal. The laminating pouches will be used to laminate their certificates of completion for tasks assigned. The students will be able to then take their certificates home without worry of them being destroyed in their backpacks. What a joy it will be for them to show their parents, grandparents, etc. how their hard work has paid off.
