Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has a unique blend of language learners. We have students that migrate from Latin and South American countries. As they are learning to speak English as a new language, they still desire to read in their native languages of Spanish and Amharic.
Our school is in the heart of a welcoming Hispanic community with strong parent support for reading and education.
We are a PK-8 Education Campus with students that come from primarily low-income households, so they rely on the school and library resources to fulfill their love of reading and creative maker activities!
Books in Amharic are hard to find, even at our public library. This project will help support our students as they transition to a new country.
My Project
We have a unique population of students that relocate here from Amharic-speaking countries. The transition to a new country and new language can be difficult. Having books available in their native language can make that transition easier.
The variety of bilingual early reader books along with familiar tales like Wizard of Oz and Aesop's Fables will help build their language skills and their love of reading.
There are no books in our library to support them and even our public library has very limited resources. Adding a collection of Amharic books will be a very valuable addition to our library!
