Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a wonderful group of resilient and forward thinkers. In 5th grade, we began a new curriculum this year which is completely online. These kiddos have been persevering through very difficult content while trying to "learn" a new way to learn. I have students who problem solve independently and beam with pride when they are able to help others do the same. The students come in each morning and get started on their curriculum and work through their productive struggles to find success. They have had a reputation in school for being a very sweet group of students, and they are living up to that reputation. They are thoughtful, kind and so hard working.
However, the one thing they're missing this year to help them delve into their learning, is a comfortable place to work.
My students sit in chairs that are over 20 years old. They are made of hard plastic and they were not designed in the ergonomically driven world we live in today. I would love to give them more comfortable options in the classroom.
My Project
Due to the curriculum being entirely online, it is essential for students to be in a comfortable seat. Some of my students are much more successful when they have the ability to move a little while they work which makes the wobble chair and wobble cushion a perfect option. Others seem to work better when they are able to sit close to the ground and hold their knees up or cross their legs like pretzels. Which is why I am requesting the comfortable ground chair.
We have such high expectations for our students and I love watching them rise to meet those expectations.
I believe it's time to give them flex seating options to make them more comfortable while they are working towards their goals for 6 hours each day. Adults wouldn't be expected to work sitting in such uncomfortable chairs. I really think this will elevate their learning and their motivation to work if they were more comfortable.
