My students need a class set of the novel, Hoot, to enhance their understanding of ecosystems through realistic fiction. As we are dissecting owl pellets, the novel will allow us to understand why it's important.

My Students
My class is made up of an extraordinary group of students, a group of students that are the hardest subgroup to show academic growth!
Academic and Intellectually Gifted students deserve to have meaningful educational opportunities and grow in their learning.
As an Academic and Intellectually Gifted specialist, I help facilitate the learning of 35 gifted students in 4th and 5th grades. We focus on the areas of reading, math, and nonverbal skills. These students love learning and need the tools necessary to enrich their studies.
My Project
Having a class set of the novel, Hoot, will allow a more interdisciplinary approach to teaching ecosystems.
Students will be dissecting owl pellets to help better understand the predator prey relationship, and the novel will help students to understand why ecosystems are important and what happens when an ecosystem becomes imbalanced.
The novel will reinforce our ecosystem study in Science, and will introduce the use of persuasive writing as we write our local leaders to help protect species native to our state, replicating the actions of kids in the novel. Students will also participate in a Socratic Seminar to examine characters in depth. There are many objectives this novel will teach that ties to the student curriculum in a fun and creative way.
