I teach Adapted P.E. and ESL (pre-k to grade 5) at two of the five sites of P226M in Manhattan. The majority of my students are young children diagnosed with Autism. I teach 6 classes at one site(40 students) and 8 at the other site(58 students) which includes one class for students with diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disorders, one class for students diagnosed with Hearing Impairments, and our inclusion class. I've recently started teaching tap dancing to some of my students and they really enjoy it. We've been using strap on taps known as disco taps. Tap dancing is an art form that is just as much about making music as it is about dancing. Disco Taps are functional for learning basic steps but do not allow students to learn the intricacies of creating music with their feet. Proper tap shoes will allow my students to learn how to use their feet and tap shoes correctly. Twenty students will be choreographing a routine to perform at our Spring Fling in April and again at the Graduation Ceremonies in June. We will continue to rehearse with the Disco Taps but we'd love to have proper tap dancing shoes to rehearse and perform in. The shoes will continue to be used by incoming students in the years to come so we will need duplicate sizes for children ranging from age six to age ten.
