This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kids need to move it, move it, move it! My students need to get up and be active. Like many schools, we do not have a budget for physical education classes and we need to add sports equipment so my students can be active.
I teach in an urban school setting and like kids anywhere, my students love to be active and play various sports.
I only get the students twice a week for thirty minutes. I need to manage their time wisely and sitting and waiting for your turn to play a game or practice a ball skill creates lots of problems and missed opportunities.
My Project
I have requested basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls and general use game balls (similar to kickballs). We will be able to concentrate on the following sports; basketball, volleyball, and soccer along with throwing, kicking, and catching skills. Picture a fourth grade class lined up across from one another working on their soccer skills. They would get many repetitions which would improve their basic soccer skills and fundamentals, provide a physical fitness activity, and be lots of fun. Right now, this can't happen because I don't have enough soccer balls.
Laying a good foundation for physical fitness in elementary school is vital for their well-being later in life.
Having a turn and an opportunity to participate gives them the feeling of being successful and important. Physical education is about moving, moving, moving and the requested materials will help us achieve this goal.
