This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As a school counselor in Philadelphia, you can never predict what your day will look like. What I can count on, is our students - without fail - greeting you with a smile and putting their best foot forward despite what they have going on in their personal life.

For many of our students, walking into our school allows them a sense of relief and safety.

I can guarantee you that our students are some of the most resilient young adults you will meet. Still, our students benefit a tremendous amount from a safe, nurturing place where they can break bread and speak openly about their feelings.

There have been countless times where a student walks in my office and asks "Ms. Kelly, do you have a snack?" Students cannot learn if they are hungry and many feel insecure about eating the free lunches our Title I school provides. By supplying me with snacks, I can provide my students a space where they can rejuvenate, enjoy a healthy energizing snack, and experience a caring loving environment.
