Happy Hands: Building Fine Motor Success Through Sensory Activities
Help me give my students sensory activities that are designed to help build the muscles in their hands so they will have strong fine motor skills for writing, cutting and building.
Our school is a celebration of community built on our diversity. I have many that come from very low socio-economic conditions to those from affluent families. My classroom is culturally rich with multiple languages represented. Even with all these differences, we come together to support and educate our children and develop leaders who are prepared for the future.
Kindergarten is a journey of discovery and a time to build the foundation for future school success.
It is here where we learn to read, not only for learning, but for enjoyment and where writing becomes a means to express ourselves. It is a time to use our creativity to explain the world around us and to better understand ourselves.
My Project
I currently have a few stations in my classroom to help build fine motor skills. I would like to expand them to address the ever growing sensory issues we are seeing in children that are not exposed to the "touch and feel" development that used to be a part of growing up. Our students learn so much through manipulating puzzles and beads, digging in the dirt, and playing in puddles. Technology and safety concerns have kept kids from exploring their environment with their hands. Therefore, the muscles used for cutting, writing, and building are often under developed when kids get to school.
By donating to this project you will be giving my students sensory and fine motor experiences that will build the muscles in their hands that they will use in their writing across the curriculum.
When writing or cutting is difficult, my students don't want to do it, which results in frustration. Building their fine motor skills allows them to express themselves in an appropriate way and not be inhibited by anything. School becomes fun and learning is exciting.
