Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in an latino immigrant community with a high poverty status. Most of my students remind me of myself when I came to the USA as an immigrant. I want my students to be exposed to holidays, traditions, and to new books. My students are respectful and ready to learn. Books will arm them with information, knowledge, and power. I hope that they catch the reading bug at this crucial age of 7.

I've often heard that one way to determine how poor people are is by looking at the amount of paper in their homes. My students don't own books or paper tablets at home. By contrast, in my home, my daughters have bookcases filled with books and desks with reams of paper. I want my students to be exposed to quality literature. I want them to see and touch new books. In my school, we have to copy books "readers" for their reading materials.

The Halloween books and Dia de los muertos books will help them understand our upcoming holiday. Although Dia de los muertos is celebrated during Easter, students will be able to make a connection between their holiday and Halloween. All of my students are from Mexico. Learning about Halloween will be a real pleasure for them.

You will make it possible for my students to enjoy this Halloween. Your help will ensure that students learn to compare and contrast, a skill that they must acquire to be successful learners. Your help will make a difference in the lives of my students who don't have new books.
